Fire crews tackle the blaze at a barn near Godshill
Firefighters are still on the scene of a huge barn fire near Godshill.
Five fire engines were called to tackle the blaze at Berrycroft Farm on Roud Lane which was reported at 23.18 last night.
The barn, which stretched 50x20metres, contained a number vehicles, no persons were believed to have been inside and no injuries have been reported.
100 tonnes of hay were apparently stored in the barn at the time.
Firefighters remain at the scene this morning, continuing to ensure the scene safety and dampening down the surrounding area.
Simon Firth from Bembridge Fire Service told Isle of Wight Radio, 'it was quite an intense fire due to the make up of the straw and hay.
'Basically it's grass which is waterproof so the fire gets into the middle. The only way we can truly fight it is to spread the straw out onto open ground, otherwise the water just runs off and the fire still burns.
'Presently that's what we're carrying out with the help of the farmer and his machinery'.
Fire crews say they aren't yet sure what caused the blaze to start.
