Public Choose Proposed New Artwork in Newport

Public Choose Proposed New Artwork in Newport
By Charles Ballard Tue, 31 July 2012 6:10PM

The public have chosen their favourite proposal for a new piece of artwork that celebrates the life of famous former Isle of Wight resident John Milne.

World renowned seismologist Milne lived in Shide from 1895 until his death in 1913 and is widely credited as revolutionising the study of earthquakes by inventing a new type of seismograph - called the horizontal pendulum seismograph - while he worked in Japan.

During the first half of July, members of the public were asked to vote for one of four proposed designs for the artwork, which will be placed onto three enamel panels and erected on the corner wall at Little London car park in Newport. Voting was available on the council's website and also at the Quay Arts Centre.

Following the voting process, the design by Southsea based artist Kevin Dean was chosen as the public's favourite.

Kevin will now work with a project team to develop and finalise the proposal in response to feedback from local voters. He will then work with local firm AJ Wells to produce the design on the enamel panels.

It is anticipated the new artwork will be put up installed in Newport later in the autumn.
