High Sheriff's High Praise For Challenging Young Islanders

High Sheriff's High Praise For Challenging Young Islanders
By Contributed Tue, 24 July 2012 3:30PM

The High Sheriff of the Isle of Wight has praised the achievements of challenging young islanders who completed an epic expedition across Scotland.

Nick Hayward presented awards and qualifications to the  group of 12-14yr old boys at a special awards evening in Newport on Thursday (19th June), after they trekked over 200kms on foot and in canoes carrying all their own equipment acrossScotland.

The eleven day expedition was run by Isle of Wight charity Challenge & Adventure which works with challenging and disadvantaged young islanders, using outdoor activities to challenge their behaviour, build their confidence and help them get their lives back on track.

12 year old Jaq Dyer was presented with an award for outstanding contribution during the Wilderness Challenge. The youngster also presented the charity with a cheque for £300 which he'd raised in sponsorship saying "The money should be used so that the charity can continue it's good work"

The High Sheriff commended the young people at the awards evening saying "A special celebration for some great youngsters. Considering their backgrounds the young peoples achievements over the two week were amazing, but a great deal of the success is down to Challenge & Adventure "

Phil Wells from Challenge and Adventure, said “It was a brilliant to see so many people turn out to celebrate the young peoples achievements. The Wilderness Challenge is an incredible feat for the young people, none of whom had done much in the outdoors before."

"They can be incredibly proud of having completed this journey, a journey which very few people can say they have done.

After watching a video of their achievements, Mother of one of the young people, Theresa said "I have never felt so proud of my son and it's a great feeling. God help him if the words 'I can't do it' ever leave his mouth again because I now know that my son can do anything if he tries hard enough"

Cabinet Member for Children's Services, Dawn Cousins also attended the presentation evening “I was delighted to be present at the Challenge and Adventure Awards Ceremony and congratulate all the young people who received awards for undertaking such challenging activities and showing what can be achieved through perseverance and endeavour"
