Island Children to have their say

Island Children to have their say
By Charles Ballard Wed, 11 July 2012 1:19PM

All school children between the ages of 8-16 are to take part in a survey to gauge their views about life on the Island.

The aim is to give the council and schools a better understanding of what school children face on the Island and to help them tackle any issues that have arisen from the survey.

The survey will concentrate on the following topics: living on the Island, school life, health, their views on local facilities, and the issues of feeling safe whether this be at school or in their home lives.

Jim Davies MBE good childhood advisor with the Children's Society, said: "More than 30,000 children across the UK have contributed to our research and we know a great deal about what influences children's own sense of well being.

"But this partnership with the Isle of Wight will create opportunities in one authority to respond to the needs of children and young people in a co-ordinated way that will produce measurable improvements in children's well being."

Councillor Dawn Cousins, has welcomed the survey:

"This Island-wide survey will give us the most complete picture yet of how our children feel about living and learning on the Island.

"What I particularly welcome is the fact that this survey goes beyond simply collecting the information, it establishes a framework through which we can actively respond to what we are being told by these young people. This process will include meetings with the children themselves so they can explain more about the answers that have been given."

The survey will take place in the autumn term time, with focus groups and community consultations taking place in November and December.
