The provisional number of recorded crimes at the Isle of Wight Festival 2012 is down, according to Isle of Wight Police.
Sergeant Dave Steele of Hampshire Constabulary’s Event Planning Team said:
“Initial provisional figures show reports of crime at the Isle of Wight Festival went down again this year from 316 in 2011 to 244 to 2012. A full analysis of all the figures is underway and these will be published in due course.
“A dedicated operation to prevent and detect crime was carried out in conjunction with festival organisers, security staff and partner agencies.
"Many officers, staff and special constables worked longer shifts in the challenging conditions to ensure the event retained its relaxed, family-friendly reputation.
“Additional tactics and technology included extra signage with crime prevention advice, enhanced Bluetooth messages, and my @FestivalCop Twitter account, which attracted hundreds of followers during the event as we tweeted travel, weather and safety advice. Thank you for all your questions and positive feedback.
“Hampshire Constabulary aims to make the most of technology so we can protect communities and provide an excellent service to the public.
“We're most grateful for the support of all our partner agencies, particularly Isle of Wight Council, Solent ferry companies, bus operator Southern Vectis, and local media organisations, plus the extra invaluable commitment from members of the public, such as 4 x 4 vehicle owners, who gave time and expertise to keep residents and visitors safe."
